TBD* is a student-run design studio at California College of the Arts. Together, my partner, Hyunsoo Kang, and I met with the art program manager and the chief of communications of SFBART to come up with a series of designs that could be used to beautify ugly construction barriers. We spent a semester doing research and brainstorming different designs that could spread positivity and represent San Francisco.
We were told that the exact shape and sizes of these walls were unknown as the construction is constantly expanding and moving from station to station. However, we did know that they would need to be 8 feet tall. From this, we were able to create designs that were flexible enough to work in different sizes where they could be cut up and applied in sections.
While researching the BART Rider Experience Guide we found that BART has two different types of zones within the stations; places where riders are stagnant waiting for trains, or passages where they move through quickly. We created designs that can be absorbed in an instant but also have enough depth to look deeper into. In this design, we hid secret words as well as QR codes that link to an interactive AR filter.
